Bristol Warning: £80 fines and hungry pests if bins are left out

Bristol residents have been warned they could face £80 fines this autumn due to a common bin mistake.

Local experts warn that this common mistake could also attract pests as well as financial consequences. Households this year are being warned to double-check one simple thing, as failing to do so could put them at risk of a smelly surprise.

Waste experts at Buff Removals, a Bristol-based waste and removals company, say thousands of residents across Bristol could unknowingly breach local council rules if they leave their wheelie bins out for too long. Bristol City Council can fine up to £80 for bins left on pavements or driveways after collection day.

“It’s a very easy mistake to make,” said Ethan Jury, Co-Founder of Buff Removals.

“But if your bin is left out for days, it can block footpaths, become a nuisance for neighbours, and also attract pests. In many areas of Bristol, that's enough to land you with a fixed penalty under Environmental Protection laws.”

The £80 fine isn’t the only concern, but the potential hygiene and pest outbreak, which are especially common in autumn, when pests like rats and foxes begin their food and shelter hunt before winter.

“If the lid on your bin is not shut properly, or the bin gets blown over, you’ll have a mess on your driveway or path and some very unhappy neighbours.”

Under Section 46A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Bristol City Council has the power to fine residents who “fail to follow reasonable waste collection rules”, which includes leaving bins out for extended periods or blocking public walkways.
